Upper Newport Bay Nature Reserve is a protected wetland on the northern end of Newport Beach, California, located two miles south of John Wayne Santa Ana Airport, and 16 miles from Disneyland. The 752 acres of wetlands are protected by the State of California Fish & Game to conserve the flora & fauna of the wetlands. The 135 acres of land are protected & managed by Orange County Parks for residents to learn about the area at the interpretive center and take in nature from the paved & gravel trails for walking, cycling, & horseback riding. The trails circle the reserve and up the San Diego Creek as well.
The bay takes water in from San Diego Creek, which is mainly runoff from the Santa Ana Mountains to Newport Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The bay is home to many migrating birds and one of the few pristine estuaries for birds per OC Parks.
It is also great for plane spotting, as it is right under the take-off path for John Wayne Airport, which can be loud! You can use flight tracking apps to see which plane is taking off.
